Government Investigation of Cable Companies May Mean Lower Prices and Better Service for You

Various states are actively investigating whether cable companies are fulfilling their agreements.

A 16-month investigation led by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman revealed that over 2.5 million subscribers in the state were “repeatedly cheated into paying more [for] internet speeds the company knew it would not provide.”

People complained that loading times were 80% slower. That Wi-Fi signals were much weaker.

And that they were given modems and routers that were incapable of achieving speeds that were promised. Which would lead to upgrades that wouldn’t be necessary if they were given proper hardware to start with.

And yet the problem isn’t just happening in New York alone, but in other places in the country too.

In Washington state, the Attorney General Bob Ferguson recently filed a $100-million lawsuit against a local cable service provider, for violating the state’s Consumer Protection Act over misleading claims and practices.

And in California just two years ago, the state filed a $25-million charge against a regional cable company over a security breach, according to Consumer Affairs.

What happened was tens of thousands of customers’ —all of whom paid additional fees to keep their personal information private— discovered their names, phone numbers, and addresses were being listed online.

But even though several states are cracking down on Big Cable, there are still many ways you can protect your plan and ensure you’re getting the best service possible.

In view of what’s going on, you need to ask yourself the following 5 questions:

• Do you like to watch a lot of movies?
• What equipment do you need?
• Will you be able to watch your favorite shows?
• Do you save money with your current plan?

By answering these, you won’t have to guess whether you’re being shorted on connection or bandwidth, or if you’re unfairly paying higher rates than a nearby neighbor.

And as far as premium TV channels go, be sure to check if your subscription is up to date.
